VW Transporter T5.1 - Tuning Guide

2.0 CR 84, 102, 140 & 180 BHP Models

2.0 CR TDI Engine

The T5.1 comes with a 2.0 common rail diesel (CR) engine with 5 different power outputs, 84, 102, 115, 140 and 180bhp formats. The 84, 102, 115 and 140 bhp models are all mechanically identical other than having different gearboxes, 140bhp models either have a 6 speed manual or DSG (automatic) gearbox whereas the lower BHP variants come with a 5 speed manual.

Six speed or DSG models can easily cope with 420 NM of torque whereas five speed models torque needs to be capped below 350 NM and introduced in a smooth fashion peaking at around 3000 RPM.  We have had numerous examples brought to us for retuning after being tuned elsewhere that have ended up having two or more clutches/flywheels or gearboxes (expensive problems that would not have happened with correct tuning). Symptoms of incorrect torque delivery on the five speed models are flywheel judder, premature failure of clutch, gearbox, driveshafts and flywheel.   Few tuners know how to gradually introduce the torque and all standard data base maps that get bought in are completely wrong.  Around 8 years ago we spent hundreds of hours developing our software for these and have the perfect solution for good power output that is completely drivetrain friendly.

We have tuned in excess of 500 Euro 5 T5.1's to industry leading standards with 100% satisfied customers.  We regularly get customers from all over the country with their T5.1's coming to us based on our big reputation for getting these tuned right, first time and every time.  Overall the above single turbo models cope exceptionally well with our methods of tuning and many we have tuned are still driving around with zero issues at over 300,000 miles.

BITDI 180 BHP variants do not have the reliability of the above single turbo models and need to be cared for and tuned with huge attention to detail.  Particle filters clogging, EGR coolers and engines are well documented for early failure.  Low engine compression and burning of oil are common and caused by failing EGR coolers.  Please contact us for more information or google (CFCA Engine EGR cooler issues) before booking your BITDI model in with is for tuning.

Guide Tuned Power Figures -

84, 102 and 115 BHP Models - 165-175 BHP and 330-350 NM

140 BHP Models - 175-185 BHP and 410 - 430 NM

180 BHP Models - 200 - 210 BHP and 440 - 460 NM

Stage 1 rolling road tuning of the T5.1 costs £345.00 including VAT.

Tuning of these typically takes 60 -90 minutes and you are welcome to wait with the van and enjoy the tuning process.

Gearbox Tuning

140 BHP and 180 BHP models can also come with a DSG gearbox as an option, the DQ500 gearbox can be tuned to provide faster shift times, improved shift points and an optimised driver experience.  DSG Tuning costs £245 on its own or £150 when carried out with an engine tune.

Before and tuning work commences your car is put on our rolling road, full diagnostics carried out and data logs  taken to establish the health of the vehicle. DPF regeneration and minor adaptions are all carried out before tuning where required at no additional cost.
